Etymology
The New Liberty is named in honor of its predecessor, a Boston-based magazine entitled Liberty,
published by Benjamin Tucker from 1881 - 1908. Liberty was essential to forming the 19th Century American
individualist anarchist movement by publishing various essays and serving as an outlet for public debate over anarchism and individualism. Well known contributors within
the movement include Tucker, Lysander Spooner, and Voltairine
de Cleyre. Adorning the masthead of the magazine is the famous quote from anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon,
"[Liberty is] Not the Daughter But the Mother of Order."
